Upon seeing this incident, Uhtred charges into battle (at the young age of 11) and does little more than make the Dane, Ragnar the Fearless, laugh! Ragnar takes him as a slave of the Danes but in time grows fond of him. The Danes attack Bebbanburg, home of Ealdorman Uhtred, Uhtred etc. Then the Danes arrive, and Osbert’s elder brother Uhtred is killed making Osbert the eldest son of Uhtred, and Osbert is then christened again as Uhtred. The story begins when Uhtred is not called Uhtred, but is instead called Osbert, second son of Saxon Ealdorman Uhtred – Osbert Uhtredson. Uhtred himself (the protagonist) is still a bit of a mystery. But it wasn’t a stand out book and to be honest I found it a little slow. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the book, I enjoy lots of books. Whilst I have watched the first few episodes since, and really enjoyed them, the same can’t really be said for the book. I decided to read The Last Kingdom after receiving the first series on DVD as a Christmas present. It has indeed been a long time since I last posted a review, and what feels like a long time since I read this book.
